What remains of the Common, in itstrisected and shorn condition, is still of considerablevalue to the residents in the neighbourhood. Whenthe Committee was formed to contest the views of LordSpencers lawyers about W^imbledon, the attention ofthe Commoners of Wandsworth was directed to theirlegal position. In 1870, a Committee for the protection of theCommon was formed, at the instance of Sir Henry Peek,who offered £1,000 if the inhabitants would collect£4,000 for a suit against the Lord of the Manor todetermine the rights of the Commoners. A great partof the money was collected, but when the Wimbledondispute was arranged, it was ascertained that LordSpencer was disposed to make a similar arrangementabout Wandsworth, and an agreement was soon cometo with him.
