Holography. Researchers working with laser beams (green) to produce interference patterns (on screen at upper right). Holography uses laser beams to record the dimensions of an object as a set of interference patterns. Shining light on the pattern recreates a holographic image of the object. This technique is used in security markings and other applications. Interference is an effect observed when waves overlap and either constructively reinforce or destructively cancel each other, producing the alternating light and dark patterns seen. A laser beam consists of light of the same frequency (coherent light), and it is formed by stimulating atoms to produce light.
