Laser cutting. Sparks fly from a plate of steel as it is cut by an infrared laser. This test is part of an evaluation of the laser for use in the car industry. The steel plate is a similar thickness () to that used to make cars. The laser is a YAG-Nd solid-state type, with an yttrium aluminium garnet crystal (YAG) doped with neodymium (Nd). Instead of the usual 'flash-tube pumping', this new laser uses small semiconductor diode lasers to excite the neodymium. This allows much greater efficiency - thus smaller and more powerful lasers than before. This project is co-funded by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and General Motors.
