But troniboni and double-drums are now fo frequently ufed at the opera, oratories, and in fymphonies, that they are become a nuifance to lovers of pure harmony and refined tones: for, in fact, the vibrations of thefe in- ftruments produce noife, not mufical founds. TROMP, Martin Harpertzoon, in Biography, a famous Dutch admiral, was born at the Brill in 1597. At the age of eight years he was deftined for the fea-fervice, and was fent on board a fhip bound for the Ealt Indies. Whilit he was very young he was taken prifoner by an Englifli pirate, with which he continued for two years, ac- quainting himfelf with the ftratagems and manoeuvres prac- ticed in that kind of fervice : and being afterwards employed in the Mediterranean, he was captured by the Turks, from whofe cuftody he had the good fortune to make his efcape. In the fervice of the States, he accompanied the famous Peter Hein in his various expeditions, and being his favourite, fought by his fide when he was killed. By various gra- dations he was advanced to the rank of admiral, and in February 1639, he purfued a Spanifh fquadron, and in an engagement off Graveline, captured and deltroycd five men of
