Some short-stemmed carnations of the new crop are coming in, but prove far less popular than asters. Cosmos is abundant and of fine qual- ity, but it is hard to move. The same holds true of liatris, coreopsis, calen- dulas, helichrysums and other miscel- laneous flowers. Lily of the valley re- mains scarce and higher priced than ever before. There is a good supply of longiflorum lilies and outdoor specio- sums are now abundant and good. Few gardenias are available, but a few cat- tleyas are coming in, enough to fill the few calls for these flowers. Dahlia Exhibition. While less numerous than usual, the dahlias at the annual show of the Mass- achusetts Horticultural Society Septem- ber 8 and 9 were of superfine quality. Dahlias are flowering quite late this sea- son, and some fields are just starting to bloom, which accounts for the reduced exhibits. John K. Alexander made the largest exhibit, staging some 2,000 flow- ers, all of top-notch quality and embrac- ing all classes. He secured a good pro- portion of the premiums. Dahlias, as usually staged, are far from decorative, and the long rows of bottles contained single blooms each. While they may ap- peal to some specialists, they pall on anyone with artistic taste. The Boston Cut Flower Co. has come to the fore at recent exhibitions and on this occasion put up a charming and most artistic
