Space walk. Astronaut Susan Helms on the first space walk during mission STS-102 to the Internat- ional Space Station (ISS). The Space Shuttle Discovery flew this mission from 8-20 March 2001. Helms is anchored to Discovery's remote manipul- ator system (RMS) robot arm. On the mission, the ISS was outfitted and the first ISS crew was taken back to Earth. Helms was one of the three members of the second crew brought up to the ISS on Discovery. The ISS is a joint effort between NASA, the European Space Agency, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan and Brazil. The ISS, which should be completed in 2004, has been manned since late 2000.
