A girl, Katherine Reyes, puts food out for pigs at her grandmother's small farm near Puerto Murta, on Lago General Carrera in southern Chile. Located not far from the Carretera Austral-the system of roads and ferries which traverses southern Chile from Puerto Montt south to Villa O'Higgins-the farm raises pigs, sheep, goats, cows as well as hay and many vegetables. Much of the life in southern Chile is rural and primitive, but with rich land and plenty of rain, people seldom go hungry.
