Agriculture Interior Madeira

The interior of the island of Madeira has very deep valleys or gorges, and a 16th century system of Levadas - irrigation canals that traverse the hills and valleys of the island - enable the people of the mountain villages to live and farm the fertile soil on the terraces on these steep slopes. Alongside the canals are maintenance trails that now form glorious walking paths covering some 1350 miles of the island.
