In 1868 he waselected President, and reelected in 1872. The adoption of the FifteenthAmendment and peaceful settlement of the Alabama Claims were amongthe most important events of his administration. After retiring from thePresidency, General Grant spent two years in foreign travel, receiving unusualattentions from the rulers of the countries he visited. In 1884 General Grant became stricken with a fatal illness in his throat,in the course of which he nevertheless wrote his Personal Memoirs, com-pleting his literary labors only four days before his death at Mount McGregor,New York, July 23, 1885. His remains were taken to New York City, wherethey were placed to rest in the tomb erected to his memory in Riverside Park,overlooking the PERSPECTIVE OF PROPOSED UNION SQUARE WEST OF THE CAPITOL GROUNDS AND HEAD OF THE MALL DEVELOPMENT.
