Coronary angiography. Surgeon injecting contrast medium into a wire catheter in the arm of a 50-year-old man during a coronary angiography examination. This procedure is used to examine a patient's coronary arteries. The wire catheter has been passed along the patient's arteries to a position near the heart. When it emerges from the catheter, the contrast medium enters the bloodstream and passes into the heart's coronary arteries, highlighting them on an X-ray. If problems such as narrowed arteries due to coronary artery disease are discovered, a coronary angioplasty treatment can be carried out to prevent a heart attack.
