It is in this valley the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, when it firstcrossed the Allegheny Mountains, was compelled to bolster itself alongthe side of the mountain by an enormous stone wall known as BuckhornWall, which was considered one of the oreat encrineerinor feats of its River cuts its narrow bed many feet below the railwaytracks, and the sides of the mountains rise abruptly to a height varying. EAl R1\KR IN VIRGINIA. at River Valley. from 1,500 to 2,000 feet. The scene presented above shows theBaltimore & Ohio R. R. tracks in the center, on the south side of thestream, and the Hne of the Morgantown & Kingwood Railway, whichhas recently been completed through to Rowlesburg, on the otherside. Far up the valley is the cement works built on the steep side ofthe mountain. Interesting features of the domestic life of this valley are thediminutive farms, which do not comprise more than 100 or 200 squarefeet, cultivated on the sides of the mountains at angles of 45 degrees. At all seasons of the year this territory presents a marvelous pan-orama of beauty. It is in this section occurred the preliminary skir-mishing of the Civil War between McClellan of the Union Army, andFloyd of the Confederate, and in the records of the war it is shownthat many men were lost in falling over the deceptive precipices whichabound in that neicrhborhood.
