FOUR CHARACTERISTIC PHASES OF SHIP S ROLLING WITH THE ANTI-ROLLING RANKS IN AND OUT OF ACTION on a ship when she is struck by aseries of comparatively regular wavesand struck in the measure of herindividual number of such circumstances the influ-ence of resonance will be promptlyfelt, and there will be an increase ofthe angle of heeling from wave towave. All large rolling amplitudesobserved in practical seafaring aredue merely to the influence of re-sonance between wave and vessel. On this fact the present devicehas been based. It utilizes a second-ary and artificial resonance in orderto annihilate the influence of the pri-mary resonance between waves andship. This secondary resonance isintroduced by means of a U-shapedtank, located athwartship and ex- tending from side to side, in whicha w,ater column can oscillate with thesame number of swings per minutethat are peculiar to the particular shipunder consideration. The ship will heel only as far as thewater under th
