Part of Heimaey (left) seen over volcanic rocks and lava field, which stretches all the way to the sea, from Eldfell, which erupted in 1973, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland. The eruption lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January.
