Tows were made, as far as possible, transverse to the long axis of the pond and at a velocity of two to three knots. The cyclometer readings indicated that usually two to three cubic meters of water were filtered for each sample. Aliquots of each sample were counted under a dissecting microscope. The size of the aliquots was adjusted so that 50 to 100 of each of the important forms were counted.
