Within this is anothercircle four feet in diameter, and this surrounds the colossalface of an image handsomely carved in bold relief. Thelength of the face, from the chin to the top of the hair, isthree feet four inches, the width two feet four inches. Ithas been purposely disfigured, but the features are still verydistinct and striking. It is probably an image of the godof the temple, perhaps the face of old Baal himself. The temple at Deir Asheir stands upon an elevated plat-form, ornamented with a frieze and cornice of its own. Itis one hundred and twenty-six feet long and sixty-nine. There are otherancient buildings at this Deir Asheir, and the place is wellworth a visit. Proceeding farther north, there are remnants of smalltemples at various points along the slopes of Neby Sheet is the tomb of Seth, under a vaulted roommore than one hundred feet long. The tomb is about tenfeet broad, extends the entire length of the vault, and iscovered with a green cloth.
