Outdoor market at Carlton Towers, a stately home in East Yorkshire, England, UK
The history of Carlton Carlton Hall was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Originally, it was a more simple Jacobean three-storey home. Over the years, the property has been extended by multiple family members who took up residency there. Most notably, the long right wing and clock tower were built in 1777 by Thomas Stapleton, following the designs of Thomas Atkinson of York. It was the 9th Lord Beaumont, in the 18 hundreds, who employed architect Edward Welby Pugin to create the gothic façade that stands today. Pugin's father, Augustus, had previously designed the interior of the Houses of Parliament in London. Edward Pugin was assisted by Sir John Francis Bentley, who designed Westminster Cathedral. Between them, they added turrets, gargoyles, battlements and a coat of arms to turn Carlton Hall into Carlton Towers. The interiors are thought to be an example of one of the best preserved Gothic Revival interiors in the country. As well as Windsor Castle, Carlton Towers also played Hetton Abbey in the 1988 film A Handful Of Dust by Evelyn Waugh, and provided a memorable backdrop for the television dramatisation of Charles Dickens' Micawber, starring David Jason.
