The surface soilwas black, heavy loam, and when thoroughlydry it was quite hard and would maintain avertical surface for 15 or 20 ft. without show-ing any signs of caving. The excavation for the river piers wasmostly done by pick and shovel, being handledin the dirt buckets by the derrick boom. As shown on the general ele-vation (see Fig. 1) the chuting plant wasmoved twice, the second move being back tothe first location. In addition to the above mentioned equip-ment there were the usual petty tools andsupplies for a job of this kind, on which de-preciation is not far from 100 per cent.
