This image may not be used to state or imply NOAO endorsement of any company or product False-colour optical CCD image of the quasar Markarian 205 (bottom) which lies just south of the peculiar spiral galaxy NGC 4319 (top) and appears to be connected to it by a bridge of material. In the 1970s, Markarian 205 was considered \the fulcrum of the redshift controversy\" - the debate about whether quasars were really extremely distant objects receding at enormous velocities relative to Earth. Observations in the early 1980s confirmed that Markarian 205 is indeed very distant, whereas NGC 4319 is an unrelated galaxy in the line of sight."
