Jimenas father hasinsulted Rodrigos, enfeebled by his advanced years. He calls uponhis son to avenge his honor. In spite of his love for Jimena, Rodrigoshows no hesitation. He challenges the Count and kills him. In thelovers interview which follows, Jimena is more distracted from herduty by her love than Rodrigo was, but yet resolves on demands a champion of the king, who objects that Rodrigo.
