Thrust fault, artwork. Faults occur where the upper part of the Earth's crust breaks due to the stress of processes such as continental drift. A thrust fault, which has a fault plane at an angle equal to or less than 45 degrees, is produced by forces pushing the fault together. The hanging wall, the upper side of the sloping fault plane (on the right-hand side of this fault), moves up in a reverse fault.
