. Railway master mechanic [microform] . o satisfactory to the railroad companythat an extensive application of this light has re-cently been decided upon. The introduction of this system on the palatiallimited trains will mark quite a departure fromprevious practice, which necessitated a large light PNEUHATIC HOIST FOR LOADING WHEELS. There are shown here illustrations of a pneumatichoist for loading mounted car wheels, which is inuse in the car department of the Chicago & North-western Railway in Chicago. The device is so sim-ple that only a short description of it is eleven-inch cylinder is placed beneath the rail(and midway between them) of the loading track;the piston rod is an old 7-inch steam pipe and whenthe piston is at the lowest point of stroke the upperend of the piston rod scarcely extends as high as thebase of rail. This allows the hoist to be coveredwhen not in use without placing any obstructionabove ground. When the hoist is in use an exten-sion is placed on the end of the piston rod and the. PNEUMATIC WHEEL HOIST—C. & N. W. at the top with two grooves for the axle, atright angles to each other (see Fig. 1), reaches nearlyto the height of the axle. The hoist raises the wheelsand axle above the trestle, the axle being parallel withthe rails, during the process of hoisting, then +heaxle and wheels are given a quarter turn on thehoist and are delivered to the trestle which carriesthem to the car. This device is giving such satis-faction at the Chicago shops that Mr. C. A. of the car department, to whom woare indebted for our photographs, is having severalothers built for outside points.
