Bomb explosion. Image 4 of 6. Full-scale Schlieren photograph taken approximately 2 milliseconds after a bomb has exploded within a scale-model aircraft luggage container. The blast sends circular shockwaves, heat and light energy in all directions, damaging the aircraft structure. This is a simulation of the bomb that exploded on Pan AM flight 103 in 1988. Schlieren photographs are used to visualise heat and airflow around objects. Changes in the density of air cause light to refract (bend), and show up in the image as differences in colour and brightness. See images T980/552 to T980/557 for the full sequence.
