OXE OF THE MANY NESTS OF THE WESTERN GREBE creature, the largest species of the order—and theEared Grebe. In the shadow of the tall canes Iseemed to be in some sort of a submerged tropicalforest. The leaves of the canes were thickertowards the top, while lower down the stems werebare, like miniature palm-trunks, through whichone could see only for a few feet. In this shadyretreat, floating between the stems, were the nests otthe Grebes, on the average about two yards apart. 17 Among the Water-Fowl As I slowly waded along, I could hear a constantsuccession of splashing, plunging sounds, as thebirds dove from their nests to swim off under I stood still for a few moments, they wouldreturn and suddenly emerge, sometimes within ayard oi me, only to plunge again the instant theycaught sight of the intruder.
