Artists .signa-ture incised in the carved teak shrine is adorned infront with applied ornaments of mother-of pearl and ivory, and surmounting itis a carved dove in gold lacquer, withwings outspread. JV, iiichcx: irilli shrine. 141/4 inches. 59—Arhat with Frog—Soapstone (Ming) One of the Arhats, with breast and abdomen exposed and robebound behind his armpits by a rope girdle, is seated with oneknee raised, holding up to his shoulder a frog—his admired andinseparable companion—that is biting the large ring in hisdeep-lobed ear. His mouth is opened in a merry smile. Hisblack hair is tonsured and his robes are engraved with cloudforms and flowers and a border of waves. The stone has aneven, ivory-brown tone throughout.
