Thomas Gainsborough (died 1788) was an English portrait painter and landscape artist. He was a founding member of England's Royal Academy of the Arts. Among his best known works are The Blue Boy, Portrait of Mrs. Graham, The Painter's Daughters, and Cottage Girl with Dog and Pitcher. This painting, titled The Blue Boy, belonged to the Duke of Westminster at Grosvenor House. It is now housed in the Huntington Library in California. Probably painted at Bath about 1772, it is a portrait of Jonathan Buttall, the son of a wealthy ironmonger who lived in London at the corner of King Street and Greek
