Elizabeth Shull Russell (1913-2001), American geneticist. Russell received her PhD in genetics from the University of Chicago in 1937. The same year she began work at The Jackson Laboratory, Maine, where she would remain for the rest of her career, eventually becoming the Staff Science Director. She is best known for her work in mammalian developmental genetics and especially the breeding of mice for such studies. She discovered the first mouse model for the wasting disease muscular dystrophy. Photographed in the 1930s.
