GARDEN MANUAL, FOR THE SOUTHERN STATES. 21. Green Globe Artichoke. DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF VEGETABLE SEED. ARTICHOKE. Artichaut (Fr.), Artischoke (Ger.), Aixachofa (Sp.) I<arge Green Globe. This is a very popular vegetable in the South, and much esteemed by the native as well as the foreign popula- tion from the South of Europe. It is extensively cultivated for the New Orleans market. It is best propa- gated from suckers, which come up around the large plants. Take them off during the fall and early winter months; plant them four feet apart each way. Every fall the grouud should be manured and spaded or plowed between them; at the same time the suckers should be taken off, if planted by seed. Sow in drills during winter or early spring, three inches apart and one foot from row to row, cover with about one-half ineh of earth. The following fall the plants can be transplanted and cuitivated as rec- commended above. The seeds we offer are imported by us from Italy and of superior quality; we can also furnish sprouts or plants in the fall of the year at 25c. per doz, $ per 100, $ per 1000. ASPARAGUS. Asperge (Fr.), Sparged (Ger.), Esparagos (Sp.) Conover's Colossal. The Asparagus is not extensively cultivated in the South; not that it is not liked well enough, but from the fact that it does not succeed as well as in more Northern latitudes. It seems that they are short-lived, the roots giving out soon or throwing up very small shoots. The ground should be well manured and prepared before either the roots or seeds are planted. For this climate the sowing of seed is preferable. Roots are generally imported from the North, and we find that the roots raised here, one year old, are as strong as those received
