The houses in Pullman's historic quarter are now privately owned. Some have been extensively restored and the original orange color of the bricks brought back, others are in unrenovated condition. From 1880, the industrialist George Pullman built a completely new town and factory site for the production of luxury sleeping cars for railroad companies. Chicago's Pullman neighborhood has been gentrifying since the end of the 20th century. Many residents are involved in the restoration of their own homes and in projects throughout the neighborhood.
