All Hallows by the Tower, Font cover by Grinling Gibbons. In 1682 Mr James Foyle made the church a gift of this superb font cover, carved in limewood by Gibbons. It shows a dove with outstretched wings above garlands of fruit, fir cones, flowers and ears of wheat surrounded by three cherubs. Gibbons is at his brilliant best, the realism of the carving displaying his extraordinary technical ability to imitate fruit and flowers in wood. He received twelve pounds for his work.
