Jade tortoise, Eastern Han-early Six Dynasties period, China, 25-420. A jade tortoise with snake-like head on longish concertina-like neck. The legs are bent like arms at the elbows and held close to the body. The tail swirls to a point. The carapace is covered with worn hexagonal patterns divided into four planes by the central ridge and two additional lower ridges. The jade is of buff colour with dense light brown rivering.
