A harness race held at Pikehall. Light-weight two-wheeled carts, Sulkys, career around a track
Harness racing is popular in rural areas in the North of England, and amongst the Traveller and Gypsy communities. Drivers, not jockeys, race light-weight two-wheeled carts called Sulkys around a grass track, guiding the horses using a light whip. The ponies must not gallop but maintain a gait called Pacing - moving its legs laterally, right front and right hind together, then left front and left hind. Straps prevent cantering, which can unbalance the Sulky and cause it to tip over. Races in the North of England are for small prizes and gambling attracts many to the events. This image was taken near to the end of the race: the Sulkys line up behind a vehicle which slowly accelerates up to race speed and then veers off the track for the competition to begin.
