C, was madeby a colored woman named Charlotte Scott, ofMarietta, Ohio, the morning after the assassinationof President Lincoln, and the entire cost of said monu-ment, amounting to $17,000, was paid by subscriptionsof colored people. He receivedhis degree in 1838, at Harvard, and his first produc-tion was a class poem which was delivered on that was successor of Professor Longfellow in the chairof Modern Languages at Harvard College. In 1877 hewas appointed by President Hayes to the SpanishMission, from which he was transferred in 1880 to theCourt of St. James. A long list of poetical works havebeen published to his credit.
