Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . rear wall. .\s soon as the lifter itselfis raised, however, it slides forward andupward in,the lock and frees its anti-creepengagement. The forward pull upon the knuckle indraft not only pulls the knuckle directlyforward against the pulling lugs, but alsotends to force the knuckle laterally in thedirection of the arrow in Fig. 2. To resistthis lateral pressure the knuckle is pro-vided upon top and bottom with outward-ly extending pin protector lugs. whichenter correspondingly shaped recesses inthe upper and lower walls of the coupler head. In order to relieve the knuckle pinof the greater part of the pulling andbuffing stresses the knuckle pinholes in thepivot lugs of the coupler are elongatedslightly as shown in Fig 2, allowing theknuckle to take a firm bearing within thehead in pull or huff stressing the knucklepin. Fig. 3 is a view of the coupler from thefront of the guard arm side, and Fig. 4is a view of the locomotion coupleradopted as the Lnited States Governmentstandard desi^n. We do not deem it necessary at thistime to describe the unimportant detailsof the coupler intended for bottom opera-tion. A reversion of the lock lifter andtoggle are applied with the same effect inthe movement of the parts, and a capccvering for the lifter 6 and lugs is pro-vided, forming a bearing for the lifter. Such are, in brief, a history of the de-\clopmcnt and description of the stand-
