Onthe esplanade leading from the Governors house to the W. gate of the CapitolSquare, and near the latter, is Crawfords equestrian Statue of Washington, consistingof a bronze horse and rider, of colossal size, rising from a massive granite pedestal,and surrounded by bronze figures of Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefterson, John Mar-shall, George Mason, Thomas Nelson, and Andrew Lewis. The horse is half thrownupon his haunches, and is thought to be one of the finest bronzes in the world. Alife size marble statue of Henry Clay (near the W. corner) completes the decora-tions of the Capitol Square, which is a favorite resort of the citizens and Capitul ul liiclmiond. TheCustom-House, which also contains the Post-Office, is a handsome structure of gran-ite, in the Italian style, in MainSt., between lOti/and Medical College, in rear ofthe Monumental Church, is afine specimen of the Egyptianstyle of architecture. In thevicinity is the BrocTtenhrov^ihHouse, which was the re^idence of Jefferson Davis, Presi-dent of the Southei-n Confedei -acy ; it is now used as a schoolhouse. The State Penitentiaryis a large whitewashed britkbuilding, in the W. suburbs otthe city. Other prominent ^buildings are the Lihhy andCastle Thunder Prisons; butthese are mere tobacco-ware-houses, of no interest apai tfrom the associations connected with them.
