Diaphragm plate all in point ofsteam pipes and giving an area behindit equal to the area in front, therebygiving equal draft through all the plate to have extended wings withangle irons for the slide plate and theplate to have a central extension witha slot and bolt for adjustment. Rule for setting and adjusting: Setthe plate at a point equal in area tolargest portion of stack and if enginetears the fire at front part of firebox orthrows any live spark lower the plate. why it is that for every dollars worth ofcoal we use about 25 cents worth of steamgoes to the cylinders and 75 cents worthgoes up the stack, and also why a greatmany of our engines have back pressureand compression equal to mean effectivepressure.
