John Von Neumann. Portrait of the Hungarian- American mathematician John Von Neumann (1903-57). At the Los Alamos laboratory, USA, Von Neumann helped design some of the first atomic bombs between 1945-53. An expert in hydrodynamics, his knowledge of shock waves and turbulence was of great importance in the design of the implosion device used for the plutonium bomb. In particular, he solved equations which described the detonation wave in an explosive charge. Von Neumann also helped develop electronic computers, especially the concept of the stored program computer, both at Los Alamos National Laboratory and later at Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, USA.
