Oil refinery. This is the hydrofining area, where crude oil products are processed to remove any impurities, such as sulphur. This is a SCANfining unit, which uses a proprietary catalyst system developed by ExxonMobil, together with Akzo Nobel. SCANfining (Selective Cat Naphtha hydrofining) uses a catalyst called RT-225. It minimises hydrogenation of olefins. This preserves the octane rating of the final petrol or jet fuel products, and also reduces the consumption of hydrogen.
