He re-ceived word that Lee was in full re-treat for Richmond, witli Grant closeupon his heels. One of the extremesouthern positions in the defense ofRichmond was Fort Darling atDrewrys Bluff. On the thirteenthof May, Butler succeeded in carryinga portion of the outer lines, captur-ing a considerable amount of artillery,but on the sixteenth he was repulsedand fell back upon Bermuda Hun-dred.
