This plateis designed to be operated by the 110-volt direct and 110-volt 60-cycle alternating currents. The 110-volt direct current is the onlydynamo current that will successfully operate the galvanic sideof the plate. Where this current is not to be had, the current froma battery of cells may be used. Forty cells connected in series willfurnish a current of % ampere, with a pressure of 60 volts. Thecautery and sinusoidal side of the plate must be operated from the110-volt alternating circuit. If the 110-volt direct is the only available current, it will be 170 PRACTICAL ELECTRO-THERAPEUTICS AND X-RAY THERAPY necessary to add a small motor generator for the purpose of gen-erating an alternating current for the cautery and sinusoidal ap-paratus. This motor generator (Fig. 89) is operated from the 110-volt di-rect current, and delivers an alternating current of about 70 voltspressure, which is ample for operating the cautery and sinusoidalcurrent Fig. 88.—Wall plate. The second wall plate (Fig. 88) is provided with switches for thepurpose of combining the galvanic and faradic currents, but thereis no provision for increasing or decreasing one of these currentswithout affecting the other in like proportion. There is no ques-tion that the combined galvanic and faradic currents are pro-ductive of great good in the treatment of peripheral paralysis, butprovisions for properly regulating the strength of the currents sep- DISEASES OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM 171 arately should be a part of every plate or switch-board where thesecurrents are to be used.
