Patricia McCafferty, NMFP deputy chief of staff, stand together at regional headquarters. Since the Navy's early years, medical personnel have prescribed diets for the sick and injured, but it wasn’t until 1949 that Navy Medicine had its first official dietitian. The distinction goes to Lt. Lucille Rose Clark, who entered the Navy as one of the first Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and served as a commissary officer in the Supply Corps during World War II. After the war, she was selected for regular duty and was transferred to the Medical Service Corps. Since then, dietitians like Zuzelski and McCafferty have combined the science of nutrition and the art of leadership, contributing to the health and readiness of Sailors, Marines, and other warfighters. As the NMFP deputy commander, Zuzelski is second in command and responsible for ensuring the region’s operational plans and policies are aligned with the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and carried out by all subordinate commands, which includes ten Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Commands and eight medical research labs. As the deputy chief of staff, Reserve component, McCafferty is responsible for the administration, training, and readiness of all Reservists assigned to NMFP platforms.
