Hawthorne’s desk: A wooden desk used by Nathaniel Hawthorne of Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was a popular American novelist and short story writer. From a nineteenth century travelogue of the United States of America, published in 1891, this is a photograph of one of a number of engravings (many by Edward Whymper) used to illustrate aspects of the social history, architecture, topography and geography of the USA.
