This pipette and a color-scale arecompared directly againsl a candle-flame, being observed through a camera. Dares hatmoglobinometur. tube ; the color of the scale is made to agree with that of the blood, andthe percentage of haemoglobin reckoned accordingly. (Fig. 205.) Color-index. The haemoglobin usually increases or diminishes with in-crease or diminution of the red cells. If there is any variation from thispercentage, the determination of this variation is known as the a healthy individual with 5,000,000 red cells per cubic millimetrethe normal percentage of haemoglobin should be 100. We then say thecolor-index = 1. If the haemoglobin is diminished, the color-index isless than 1. The color-index is estimated, first, by reducing the count ofthe cells to a percentage; second, by dividing this percentage into thehaemoglobin percentage. Thus if the normal percentage of red cells ispresent—that is, 100—and the haemoglobin is reduced to 50 per cent., thecolor-index is -£>%, or Reduction of the red cells to 2,500,000 = 50per cent, of the normal; now, if the haemoglo
