PHRYNIUM VARIEGATUM. Variegated Leaved Canna. This is without doubt the grandest ornamental foliage ])lant in cultivation; its habit of growth is precisely like the Canna ; it grows from a bulb or tuber, and may be wintered dry. like a Gladiolus, or kept growing the year round as a pot f)lant. The Canna-like shoots grow from 18 inches to iy<y feet high, and the eaves, which are spreading and oblong in shape, are from 6 to 10 inches long and from 2 to 5 inches broad : they are a bright green, beautifully variegated with pure white, the variegations being extremely diversified. It is almost im- possible to find two leaves exactly alike ; in some leaves the whole area is pure white, while in others only half and in some one-third, and in others again only a few faint stripes or lines, and all these leaves on one plant. It is a very free grower and a grand plant for bordering Canna beds, standing the hottest sun, in fact the fiercer the sun the more perfect are the colorings ; it is also a grand pot plant.
