By Edward Livingston Welles. ?^x=£pv N a little seven-by-nineroom, in one of theupper stories of the oldNew York Tribunebuilding, many yearsago, I frequently sawa man with a veryround bald head anda fringe of nearly whitehair under his chin. He sat at a desk whichwas almost on a level with his shoulders. He wassomewhat careless in his dress, and being verynear-sighted, he leaned down upon the desk,. describing almost the segment of a circle in thelines as he wrote. This was Horace Greeley, the founder and chief editor of the Tribune—and the note below is a rather superior specimenof his writing. I leave you to judge for your-selves as to its quality. I fancy that Mr. Greeley made a much bettereditor than he would have made book-keeper,for it would seem that his early education in theart of penmanship must have been sadly neg-lected, or else had somewhat deteriorated inthe later years of his life, under the influenceof hasty editorial writing.
