The Mithraeum is a Roman temple dedicated to the god Mithras. The god Mithras was a form of sun god who originated in cult was very popular with the Roman army, hence, in this case, the temple's proximity to the Roman fort of Carrawburgh. This temple was founded in the third century and was destroyed around 330 AD by Christians, who hated the mysterious cult and saw it as a threat to their religion.
