Porch columns near the main theater in the city of Pompeii.
Pompeii was a city of Ancient Rome, located near modern Naples and other smaller venues in the region of Campania, near the modern city of Naples. It was buried by the violent eruption of Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD. Thick layers of ash covered the two towns located at the base of the mountain, and their names and locations were forgotten. Herculaneum was rediscovered in 1738, and Pompeii in 1748. Acted as patron and frequent visitor to the work, King Charles VII of Naples, better known as Carlos III of Spain between 1759 and 1788. Since then, both villas have been excavated to reveal many intact buildings and wall paintings. Really the discovery occurred in 1550, when the architect Fontana was digging a new course for the river Sarno. But it took 150 years before a campaign was started to unearth the cities. Until then, it was assumed that Pompeii and Herculaneum were lost forever.
