J. M. Moan was born on a farm near Bel-videre, 111., and gained what he knew of books in acountry school, coming to Chicago he entered the em-ploy of the West Chicago Railway- in a humble position,but left for better prospects, to join the fortunes of theRobinson omibus and street car factory in young man readily showed his ability and was madea member of the THK OLD AND THE NEW, OR, BEFORE AMI FEi; lAKl. Failing, president; Tyler Woodward, vice-president ; Swigert, secretary and treasurer ; H. C. Campbell,general manager ; J. W. Campbell, superintendent; , electrician. The active management is almost wholly in the handsof the two Campbell Brothers, and the citizens of Port-land have nothing left to ask in their administration. Afew years ago, when a ferry boat was the only connectionover the great river, they came to Portland, saw its press-ing need, returned east, raised the money and built thebridge under the name of the Willamette Bridge Rail-way Company. As an accommodation to the residentsof East Portland they built the line there and this hasgrown in their hands to the dimensions already are both young, active, progressive, and very pop-ular, and have now long occupied a position among theleading citizens of that rich and strikingly beautifulcitv.
