Hor-. ton to report at headquarters. At this timeGeneral Houston expressed himself as convinced that absoluteindependence was the only course for Texas to pursue, andalmost at the same date General Austin wrote to Houston fromNew Orleans, expressing the same conviction. TheRevolution 1832 TO1836 San Antonio practically abandoned Matamorosexpeditioncontinues to he sent Bowie with thirty men to Colonel Neill at San Antonio,with orders to destroy the fortifications there and retire with theartillery to Goliad, as the position could not be held with thesmall force then there. Captain Smith was also directed to raisea hundred men and go to San Antonio ; it having been learnedthat a Mexican force of one thousand men were marching onthat place. Neill replied that he had no teams to move thecannon, and therefore did not destroy the fortifications. Onlyeighty men were now left at Bexar, and Governor Smith assumedthe authority to remove Travis from his position as recruitingofificer, and sent him to San Antonio with a small called for men and money.
