Brave Dutch Golden Age naval hero Cornelis Janszoon de Haan (1580-1633), known as Haantje or Rooster, died as his lone vessel defeated two Dunkirk privateers in the sea battle depicted in this oil painting on his gilded Baroque monument in the Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Ouderkerksplein, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands.

Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands: cannon fire from a ship commanded by courageous Dutch sea captain Cornelis Janszoon de Haan sinks a vessel manned by Dunkirk privateers - at the cost of his own life. Cornelis de Haan, born in Amsterdam in 1580 and nicknamed ‘Haantje’ or Rooster, died on 19 April 1633 as his ship fought an unequal contest against two Dunkirk privateers or legalised pirates. Despite being outnumbered, de Haan’s crew were victorious, but their captain was killed. The sea battle is commemorated in the Latin epitaph on the gilded Baroque memorial to de Haan in the city’s Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Ouderkerksplein, and depicted in this contemporary oil painting below it. The de Haan monument is among several memorials in the church to naval commanders from the Dutch Golden Age, the period in Netherlands history spanning the years from 1588 (the birth of the Dutch Republic) to 1672, when Dutch trade, science, art and military expertise were regarded as the best in Europe. The mainly-14th century Oude Kerk, in Ouderkerksplein, is the oldest building in Amsterdam. It was a Roman Catholic church until 1578, but gained a Calvinist congregation following the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and the Protestant Reformation. It is now a museum of architecture and art, but it still hosts a Protestant Sunday service.
