A supply ship passes the historic Footdee area of Aberdeen, a traditional fishing village which sits next to the city's harbour, Scotland's North Sea oil and gas transportation and maintenance hub. Issues surrounding oil and gas has been one of the key political battlegrounds between supporters of Scottish independence and those who prefer Scotland to remain within the United Kingdom. On the 18th of September 2014, the people of Scotland voted in a referendum to decide whether the country's union with England should continue or Scotland should become an independent nation once again and leave the United Kingdom.
